The Henry Moore frame – a timeless design.

Henry Moore was one of the most important British artists of the twentieth century, and arguably the most internationally celebrated sculptor of the period. He is renowned for his semi-abstract monumental bronzes, which can be seen all over the world.

The Henry Moore frame was originally designed by one of the sculptors that worked with Moore.

Originally, the frame was designed with a removable back and in six sizes to enable the easy changing of artworks.

The Henry Moore frame features splines in the corners – a traditional way of significantly strengthening the mitre joint of the frame – traditionally two or three splines which can either be in the same wood as the frame for a subtle option, or a contrasting wood to add more of a decorative feature.

The defining beauty of these frames is the rounding of the wood and the corners which is an integral part of the design – complementing the curves found in much of Moore’s sculptures.

At Menor, we have been working with the Henry Moore Foundation for many years and are often asked to create replicas of the traditional frame used by Moore. Our picture framing team thoroughly enjoys creating these unique frames, giving them an opportunity to get some of their more traditional tools out and employ more traditional methods.
